HERBAL REMEDIES FOR BAD BREATH (HALITOSIS)

Introduction

It is not for nothing that people say "It is the inner beauty that really matters". We are talking in literal sense here and a little bit on the physiological side of the body.

Looks do matter and they are an added advantage if you want to catch attention and make heads turn in the midst of a big gathering. But, with all those assets, if your mouth smells awful, it can be the most disastrous thing that can happen to you.

On the contrary, if you smell good both physically as well as when you speak up, the other person will have an entirely different perception of you. Not to forget what you speak to him equally matters. But we are talking more about fresh breath and how good oral hygiene can influence the way people look at you?

What is Halitosis?

Halitosis in simple words is known as bad breath. It is a common problem among people and the most frequent reason for it has come out to be poor oral hygiene.

It may be a sign of other health conditions related to the nose, teeth, gums, tongue etc.

Sometimes it may be a result of some deep seated health problem such as Kidney disease or Liver disease.

Nasal problems such as sinusitis or chronic cold can lead to blockage of the nasal area and the sinuses. Due to which there are high chances that bacterial infiltration will occur in that area.

Food we Eat and Bad Breath – the Connection

Whatever food we consume is stuck in the form of small particles in between our teeth, gums and tongue. If not cleansed properly these particles settle down in the respective areas and start decaying. This is what results in bad breath. There are certain types of food that cause bad breath given their strong odor. Vegetables such as garlic and onion are to name a few.

What all food we eat gets digested in the body and the waste products are divided into solid fecal matter, liquids which are released in the form of sweat and urine and gases which are released through the lungs.

So whatever food we eat is metabolized inside the body and its gaseous remnants when they pass through the lungs to be exhaled out also cross the oral aperture and may produce halitosis.

Poor Oral Hygiene

Most dentists advise to brush teeth especially two times per day. Usage of dental floss to remove food particles is also advised. But, people who do not brush and floss daily are at an increased risk of developing dental problems as well as bad breath. The bacteria in their mouth get enough time to decay and produce foul smell in the mouth.

People who brush their teeth daily are less likely to develop this kind of problem.

Can Tobacco Cause Bad Breath?

Smoking or chewing tobacco can cause bad breath equally. Chronic smokers or tobacco chewers have stained teeth and bad breath is a frequent complain among them.

Such people also find it difficult to taste food properly as the taste buds also get damaged and stained by constant tobacco usage.

Halitosis in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, bad breath is a result of improper digestion of the food ingested, the remnants of which decompose and produce harmful toxins that damage the body.

These toxins release foul smelling gases which can lead to bad breath.

Therefore, in order to control foul smelling breath it is very important to control the digestive system of the body.
