Nephrotic Syndrome Definition
Nephrotic Syndrome is a kidney diseases that causes kidneys to excrete too much protein. Due to some causative factors glomeruli, small tiny blood vessels (filter blood) damages and they are not able to separate the need of body and wastes. Causes may be vein blockage in kidney, some infections, diabetes, hypertension from a long time or membranous nephropathy etc. It presents with symptoms like presence of protein in urine, foamy urine, swelling of feet and around the eyes. This may lead to number of complications like acute renal failure, kidney diseases, hypertension, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, poor health etc. Urine collected of 24 hrs give accurate results and is advised to rule out nephrotic syndrome. Blood tests show decreased level of albumin. Renal biopsy and urea with creatinine are also advised to diagnose the case. Nephrotic Syndrome Causes
Nephrotic syndrome occurs due to destruction of the clusters of tiny blood vessels called glomeruli of kidneys.
Glomeruli filter your blood as it passes through the kidneys. These separate the waste products which are not needed. Glomeruli help to maintain healthy blood protein specially albumin which is needed to maintain healthy body fluid. When these are damaged, become incapable to retain protein and it gets secreted through urine. All this leads to nephrotic syndrome.
